ABOUT THE ARTISTS
> Peter Potapoff
Born and raised in Southeastern British Columbia, Peter has immersed
himself in the wide outdoors all his life. An expert photographer,
he takes his camera wherever he goes, through the landscapes he
creates spring directly from the texture and feeling that a place
conveys to his mind and hand.
Peter has made us proud by sharing his talents in the Harry Potter
room, the Jungle room
and the framed art you can view in the hallways.
> Brenda Eaton
Brenda is a local artist who began creating porcelain figures in
1992, and has been featured at the BC Creative Arts Festival. Brenda
has sold both nationally and internationally, and has had a lucrative
contract for a Christmas display at the Bay in downtown Vancouver.
Brenda doll magnificent doll artistry is displayed in the Spiderman
and Harry Potter room as well she has the display in the lobby as
part of the Castlegar Art Walk.
> Katie Hart Potapoff
Katie is a young, local artist. Raised within the artistic whirlwind
that is her family, both
parents working as full time artists, she has had the opportunity
to explore her creative ideas.
Katie has worked with many mediums including chalk pastel, acrylic,
and pencil. She also enjoys creating mixed media pieces. “I
am inspired by the joy art brings into the lives of people.”
With this as the ultimate goal in her art career, Katie will continue
to create pieces
that inspire others.
Katie has brought joy to many people here by her art work in the
Space theme room.
> Stewart Sutherland
Stewart is known to many here as a very talented “Character”.
With 'These Hands Metal Works', his company, has been very successful
since he relocated here from his native land
of Scotland.
We have had the enjoyment and pleasure of working with him while
he made our beautiful balconies over looking the pool, hand railings
inside and outside the hotel and several metal works of art in Bubblee’s.
> Shayne Bell
Shayne recently relocated to Castlegar from Calgary to find his
hidden talents, which he has done successfully. He has participated
in all areas of the hotel renovation from sweeping floors on his
first day of work to being a major participant in the design of
the Spiderman room, including the comic hallway and the city back
drop lighting scene.
Most recently Shayne has assumed the role of Assistant Manager of
the hotel.
> Frank Pezzolla
Frank, a Winnipeg native, has spent his life making the world a
more colourful place to live. Frank recently retired from the Winnipeg
School District after many years of holding a supervisory position.
Frank and his wife Ingrid came to Castlegar in the fall of 2002
specifically for the Super 8 project. Frank’s work can be
seen in all areas of the hotel. Some of Frank’s masterpieces
in the hotel are the brick wall seen in the theme concept of the
Spiderman room, the brick wall and the barrel door in Bubblee’s.
Frank is also known for his “quality control”.
> Hans (Solstice Timberworks)
Based out of Rossland, BC, Hans’s expertise is the joinery
technique. He handcrafted the Porte Coche (canopy) and the fireplace
mantle seen in the breakfast room.
> Stephanie Gauvin
Stephanie Gauvin is a youthful artist living in Rossland
BC (originally from Quebec), who needs to share a vibrant passion
for color and a love of the outdoors through her paintings. Inspired
by the beautiful mountains of the west coast, she likes to express
her style in many different mediums. From paint on canvas to murals
on glass or furniture, the artwork emanates a cheerful energy.
Her participation in the theme room project was extensive as she
painted the Spiderman room, the Coca Cola room with the snowboarding
polar bears, and last but not least the Undersea world
> Deborah Bell
Debbie, of Penticton, BC has shared here artistic talents and passion
for beauty by designing and co-building the beautiful waterfall
located in front of the hotel. She runs many other types of businesses
in Penticton and maybe after here great success here with the waterfall
this might be her next calling…
> Ed Whitteron
Ed, proprietor, of Hammerworks located in Penticton, BC brought
him here to Castlegar to
be the led carpenter of the hotel. He ran a crew here of up to 20
workers though blazing heat and frosty snow.
> John Lucier
John, as well, is here for the Super 8 project out of Penticton,
BC. He has been one of the
lead carpenters here since the fall. Some of John’s great
achievements have been the co-construction of waterfall and the
beautiful hardwood floors located in Bubblee’s.
John is most proud of actually finishing the project he started
here with Ron!
> Josie Ahearn
Josie is a Metis elder from Big River, Saskatchewan, now living
in Nelson, BC. She brings to the present day, old traditions from
the past. Handmade native-smoked leather and natural rawhide are
used in her making traditional leather products such as drums, snowshoes,
moccasins, mitts and gloves, vests, jackets. Beading, quillwork
and moose-hair tufting are some of her many talents. The ceiling
web (made of sinew) in the Super 8 theme room took over 9 hours
to weave. This Aboriginal artisan’s art has been exhibited
in Japan, Brazil, England, Germany, Holland, Belgium, Australia,
the United States, and in many different parts of Canada.
> Marg Roller
Marg Roller, local artisan and business entrepreneur, was born in
Worthing, England, immigrated to Canada and has resided in Castlegar
since 1984. You can easily find her in
her unique art store in our downtown area. Her shop invites you
to come in and browse.
Not only an accomplished painter, Marg is
also a designer and creator of children’s toys with over ten
years experience in this field.
A prime example of this talent can be viewed in one of Super 8’s
theme rooms. “M.A.K.” (Mutant Arachnoid King) as she
calls him, stands about
5 feet 7 inches tall, peers down from the webbed ceiling upon the
“unsuspecting” below him. Other clay and fabric dolls
can be viewed in her store.
